Member Spotlight: Jack

Jack - Beginner Course Member

Nine months ago, Jack was a “sideline dad,” bringing his son to classes without much understanding of the techniques or rules of Jiu Jitsu. He says, “seeing the culture at The Good Dose made me want to be involved,” and when the beginner course was introduced at the start of the year, he decided it was time to step onto the mats and try it out for himself.

Since the course has begun, Jack says he’s gained more than just technique. He says it’s “definitely a lot more physically challenging than I first thought,” but this challenge has accelerated his fitness and skill development. More importantly, the challenge has reignited his work ethic and positive mindset, with the benefits carrying over into both his personal and professional life. As for many of us, the journey so far has been a humbling one; he admits he never imagined someone 40kg lighter could “carve him up like a Sunday roast.”

Like most people starting out, Jack says it’s hard to put techniques from class into practice, but recently things have started to click. He says, “I’ve noticed the last few rolls, I’ve been pulling out things we learned in week one and two. My go-to sub is probably the Americana from side control at the moment.”

For anyone nervous about starting, Jack’s advice is simple: “don’t let hesitation hold you back. It’s fun, challenging and very rewarding. I feel fantastic after every session - albeit a bit beat up sometimes - but I’d 100% recommend everyone give it a crack. Don’t be a roadblock to yourself.”

With the beginner course nearly complete, Jack plans to keep training consistently. His goals? “Continue at a steady pace, build my cardio to handle four consecutive rounds, maybe one day tap a blue belt, and try not to get tapped by any more 16-year-olds.”

The next Beginner Course will kick off again on Monday 11th May. Join us on the mats! More info here.
